Aims & Themes

The 15th Biennial Conference of the Association for Canadian Studies in Australia and New Zealand has as its theme "Connecting Communities: Canada, Australia and New Zealand" or the acronym CAN.

Canada, Australia and New Zealand have much in common: a shared history as part of the Commonwealth, a commitment to Democracy and the rule of law, cultural ties and other shared visions and experiences. Canada and Australia are most-alike federations while New Zealand is a unitary state. All three face challenges in policy areas such as Health, Indigenous Peoples, Climate Change, the Environment, Governance, Education, Aged Care, Crime, Economics, Terrorism, Immigration, Refugees and Community. The conference will examine these policy responses, sharing ideas and experiences, thus bringing these communities closer together. The concept of community, community maintenance and community building in the face of global economic challenges will also be pursued from a variety of disciplinary perspectives.

The conference will bring together researchers from the social sciences, languages, the humanities (including history, languages, theatre studies and the arts), as well as teachers, policy-makers, novelists, poets, film-makers and artists who have focused on these areas, especially within a Canadian context. While the focus is on Canada, all three countries as well as others have much to benefit from this conference, which will share ideas and experiences.
